I began my nightlife adventure in Seoul in August 2013 when I moved there to teach English. Every weekend was a new opportunity to explore the electric atmosphere of Gangnam, and I can’t express enough how unforgettable those nights were. Although my lifestyle has changed over the years, I felt compelled to share this guide to Gangnam’s nightlife, detailing my favorite clubs and what you can expect when you hit the town.
Seoul’s nightlife is unparalleled. Having partied in cities across the globe, including Las Vegas, Barcelona, Stockholm, Berlin, and Bangkok, I can confidently say that nothing compares to the sheer insanity of Seoul. You truly have to experience it to believe it.
One of the primary reasons why nightlife in Seoul is so exhilarating is the local culture surrounding drinking. South Korea consistently ranks as one of the highest consumers of alcohol per capita in the world. In fact, Koreans consume more than twice the amount of alcohol as Russians, averaging an astonishing 13.7 shots of liquor per person each week (2014 data).
Soju, a popular Korean rice liquor, is a staple in social gatherings and can be found in every convenience store, priced around $1.50 USD (1,500 won). With an alcohol content of 20%, it’s deceptively smooth, but be prepared for a rough hangover.
In addition to the drinking culture, Seoul is a haven for Electronic Dance Music (EDM) enthusiasts. The city regularly attracts top-tier DJs and hosts major music festivals. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing legends like Tiesto, Avicii, and Kaskade perform in various venues. The energetic dance style of Koreans often involves bobbing heads, shoulder movements, and enthusiastic fist-pumping, making the atmosphere even more lively.
If clubbing isn’t your scene, don’t fret! Seoul offers several other vibrant nightlife districts worth exploring:
Gangnam is the epicenter of luxury nightlife in Seoul, featuring multi-level clubs with massive dance floors and state-of-the-art sound systems. This area is often compared to Beverly Hills, attracting celebrities and affluent locals, but it’s also a hotspot for 20-somethings looking to party until dawn.
Clubbing in Gangnam isn’t for the faint of heart—or the light of wallet. Cover charges typically range from $20 to $40 USD, and drinks can be pricey, with shots, beers, and mixed drinks starting at around $10 USD.
To save money, consider arriving early to secure a wristband that allows you to enter and exit freely. You can grab a bottle of soju from a nearby convenience store for just $1 before heading back into the club.
If you’re going out with a large group, it’s worth splurging on a table with bottle service. This not only enhances the experience but also means you won’t have to navigate the crowded bar scene constantly.
While the dress code isn’t strictly enforced, it’s a good idea to dress smart-casual. I usually opt for a V-neck, black jeans, and stylish sneakers. Just remember to avoid shorts and flip-flops, as these will likely get you denied entry.
Lastly, clubs in Seoul come alive after midnight, so don’t arrive too early. Most venues stay open until the last guest leaves, which can be as late as 7 AM or even later.
Here’s a list of my top seven clubs in Gangnam that you absolutely cannot miss:
Octagon is my personal favorite and has been ranked the 6th best club in the world by DJ Mag. The atmosphere is electric, with a massive DJ stage and stunning LED displays. Regular performances by big-name DJs make it a must-visit.
